Recently, there have been a lot of major developments in Second Life hair. Not so long ago, stores like Calico, Analog Dog and Cake introduced us to lush flexi curls. Now, the grid’s buzzing about new textures. We’re seeing richer brunettes, more vibrant reds, buttery blondes, and incredible fantasy colors that push the fashion envelope. In Episode 1 of Second Style Stylecast, we discussed three lines of hair that have undergone, or are currently undergoing, major re-texturizations: Diversity Hair, Calla & ETD.
We started with Diversity Hair. Stylist Aleri Darkes just retexturized her hair and created dozens of new styles. When she gave us fifteen styles to review, we had a hard time narrowing down which of these adorable styles to discuss. Because this was a short show, we couldn’t discuss all fifteen. After much deliberation, we decided on Kacey II, Moody, and Sherry. Kacey II is a fun side-ponytail that’s a modern take on an 80s favorite. The long, silky ponytail is great for showing off Aleri’s pure blondes and the fun color-tipped blondes and blacks. Moody is a cute razored short cut that falls over one eye. It’s great with the season’s new menswear-inspired fashions and it looks amazing with Aleri’s rich reds and deep brunettes. Finally, Sherry is a fishbone braid with soft side-swept bangs that is especially flattering in darker blondes, light and medium browns, and softer reds. Sherry is great for flirty casual looks and those year-round SL beach parties. To check out these styles and dozens of others, visit Diversity Hair, and don’t forget to pick up Lily in all colors for just $1L! Also, stop by X3D fashions next door.
Diversity’s hair is a great deal with 13 regular color packs of four hairs for just $175L; the Bombshell pack of 6 tipped blondes is $250L; the Carnival pack of 6 brights is only $300L; the Rave pack of 6 tipped blacks is $250L; and the Naturals pack of 6 natural hair colors is $300L. Of course, you could treat yourself to all of Diversity Hair’s colors for the crazy-low price of just $1000L per style!
Haedon Quine and Tigerlily Koi of Calla are also in the midst of a major retexturizing. All their new styles are coming out in their 175 new colors, and they are retexturizing their classic styles over time. To help us review their new textures, Haedon sent us Black Poplar, Day Lily, Flowering Reed, and one of Celebrity Trollop’s favorites, Marigold.
Calla’s new colors were heavily influenced by feedback they received from an in-store survey they completed, according to the Calla blog. We loved the silky, touchable pony-tail on Black Poplar; Day Lily is perfect for your hot schoolgirl outfit (seriously, we know you have one!), and the tendrils on Flowering Reed are just to-die-for! But if you really want the full impact of Calla’s new textures, look at Marigold, which the ladies recently retexturized.
I compared the old Marigold to the new Marigold in reds, it seemed to have more swing and movement. We couldn’t see any difference in the style itself, so we had to conclude the new depth was due to the new texture. Daphne compared the old and new textures using Marigold in the blondes. In addition to more movement, the hair looked more touchable. She could see that the highlights were more subtle and blended even better than before. To top that off, there are even more colors than before at Calla.
Now there are 32 regular packs of hair and 3 combo packs that each include 5 colors and sell for $200L. There are also 4 color group mega packs with 25 colors that sell for $850L. But if you really want to spoil yourself, go for the 175 color “I want them all” pack for a deeply discounted $3500L. Visit Calla (be sure to check out their jewelry while you’re there.)
While we enjoyed the cute new styles and textures at Diversity and were drooling over Calla’s silky new hair, we were blown away by the new ETD. Elikapeka Tiramisu really outdid herself. After receiving the demos of all of Elika’s 21 new hairstyles, as all of her group did, we each had to choose 3 styles to review. We have to say that was the toughest multiple choice test we’ve faced in a long time!
Daphne chose Jessica, a long wavy style; Lannah, a longer wavy bob; and Marisela, a messy updo. I went for Cora, a turned under pony bun; Juliana, a funky retro style; and Madeline II, a silky long style without bangs. Of course, we went back to buy even more once the reopening lag let up a bit. Truthfully, we were starting to go into ETD withdrawal from her store being closed for almost 3 weeks. Frankly, we couldn’t figure out what Elika didn’t like about her old textures, but the new ones are stunning.
Elika’s new color system has even has even more variety than before making it almost impossible to choose just one color, though with her new larger color packs, you probably won’t want to choose. I was lucky enough to be part of ETD’s beta-testing group (which I found out about by reading ETD’s blog), receiving some styles in the new textures well ahead of the general public. Frankly, not being able to send people to ETD for the shiny new brunettes and blacks, vibrant deep reds, and subtly buttery blondes was killing her. Now that ETD has reopened, everyone has more choices. Daphne was especially impressed by the wide range of blacks. The new textures give ETD’s hair an amazing amount of shine.
Luckily, ETD hair is still very affordable. Regular packs with 3 versions of one color sell for $150L and there are 30 of these. If you can’t choose just one color in a family, try a big color pack of 18 colors (except for the blondes with 26 – blondes do have more fun!) for $600L. The bright color pack of 36 fantasy colors is only $750L. Both of her natural packs with 5 colors each are $200L, as are the two five color packs called Elika’s favorites and Elika’s pack. Finally, the Willow pack of all the ETD colors is just $2500L; you may as well go for it! Be sure to visit the new ETD on ETD Isle, and don’t forget to check out Elika’s clothes and shoes, too!
